What happens during a well-woman exam?

The well-woman exams your MIG provider offers are preventive exams that you should schedule once a year, even if you don’t have symptoms of a problem. The exam gives them an opportunity to assess your overall health and identify potential issues in the earliest stages.

In addition to reviewing your personal and family medical history, you can expect your provider to perform a pelvic exam. 

During the pelvic exam, your gynecology provider can complete a Pap smear, collecting a sample of cervical cells to test for cancerous and precancerous changes. They may also test for human papillomavirus (HPV) and take blood to test for STDs like gonorrhea or chlamydia.

You have the opportunity to discuss any concerns or issues you have with your overall physical and mental health and your sexual function with your MIG provider. They can also provide birth control recommendations to prevent unintended pregnancies or correct hormone imbalances.
